Poly Women Make Flag Football History

By: Zyon Kelly

Did you know that flag football is the fastest-growing high school girls’ sport in America? According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, “girls’ high school flag football is on the rise, now over 70,000 girls play flag football across the country,” a number that will continue to rise each year. This fall, Poly officially joined the movement by launching its first-ever girls’ flag football team. For the first time in Poly history, female athletes are stepping onto the football field not as spectators or cheerleaders, but as players making their own mark on the game.

The start of this season marks a historic moment for Poly. For decades, football has been one of the most popular sports in Baltimore high schools, with rivalries that span generations. Yet until now, those Friday nights belonged to boys. The creation of the new team represents more than just a new sport at Poly; it’s a powerful step towards giving girls greater opportunities in athletics and breaking down barriers that have existed for decades. Many students view the launch of girls’ flag football as not only the start of the team but as a milestone for equality. The excitement has been building  across the school community.  Love Jones, a student who attends Poly stated, “Seeing the girls’ team out there is making me proud to be at Poly because it’s a big step forward for our school.”

Teachers, administrators, and students have also emphasized the significance of this moment, stating that supporting female athletes helps build confidence, community, and school pride.

Looking ahead to the girls’ season, the team will compete against other Baltimore City schools with girls’ flag football programs. Poly players will face opponents from schools like City, Mervo,  Dunbar and more. Each game offers a chance to showcase skills, build team chemistry, and prove that this new team can be a strong competitor.

Despite challenges like funding, uniforms, and practice space, excitement for the team keeps growing. Players hope their effort inspires younger girls who dream of playing football. A student who attends Poly stated, “It’s an amazing addition to the Poly family. Girls can express themselves in a new way. I love this addition.”-Kaya B

For many players, it’s not just about winning; it’s about inspiring younger women to take the field. They hope the program grows each year, attracting more athletes. With every snap, pass, and touchdown, Poly’s girls’ flag football team is writing a new chapter in the school’s athletic history.
