The History of The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute’s Alumni Foundation: An Interview with Founding Member, Mr. Pat Tracy ‘72

Background

The Poly Alumni Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was started in 1982 by Mr. Pat Tracy and a group of classmates. It substantially impacted Poly and has received significant support from Poly alumni, including George McGowen and Walter Hackman. The foundation’s mission is to ensure the continued success of our school by providing resources and opportunities for its students and faculty. The foundation provides financial resources to support student programs and initiatives, providing opportunities for students to connect with alumni and industry professionals, and helping to build a strong sense of community and school spirit among alumni. Furthermore, the roles also include supplementing the school’s resources with additional support and guidance tuition and providing financial resources to support student programs and initiatives assistance to students.

“My definition of success is having great teachers, great kids who are going to do well in life, and the greatest thing about Poly is that the future and history of the school is still being written here with you guys.”

How Did Poly Prepare You For the Real World?

Mr. Pat Tracy attributes his leadership development to their time at Poly, citing the school’s strong academic preparation and diverse student body. Moreover, he emphasized how Poly factors in strong academics, a diverse study body, and opportunities for communication and teamwork through playing sports.

“I was always kind of smart… but I was pretty good with communication, I guess. And I think the school helped me with that, frankly.”

How Can Students Get Involved with the Foundation?

Mr. Tracy shared several ways students can connect with the Alumni Foundation, which include volunteering for events and initiatives, joining the foundation’s board or committees, and participating in spirit events, such as the annual golf tournament and the annual alumni dinner. Furthermore, he shared that volunteering and participating in foundation events can help students develop new skills and build confidence; and supporting the foundation allows students to give back to their school and community.

The Difference Between Alumni Foundation and Association

The Alumni Foundation and Association are two separate entities that serve different purposes. Mr. Tracy noted that both the Alumni Foundation and Association are 501(c)(3) organizations. However, the Poly Alumni Foundation focuses on raising funds for Poly and supporting its mission, while in contrast, the alumni association focuses on engaging with Poly alumni and providing opportunities for networking and community building.

Personal Question to Mr. Tracy: How to Maintain a Positive Outlook in Life?

Mr. Tracy notes that to keep a positive outlook on life, it is important to focus on the wins and accomplishments, persevere through challenges and setbacks, and surround yourself with supportive people and positive influences.

“Being pessimistic doesn’t do you any good. You have to be optimistic and focus on the positive things in your life.”

Closing Remarks

With The Poly Alumni Foundation reaching its 42nd-year mark, it will inevitably continue to grow as a community with the involvement of future ‘’pay it forward thinkers’’ as stated by Mr. Tracy.

“The work I’ve been involved with for over 40 years has helped STEM students better themselves through education. My mother told me to get good grades in middle school so I could go to Poly, and parents in Baltimore City are still having that conversation today. I want those conversations taking place 50 years from now.”
